Walden University
The JEPSC is a publication of the Walden University Chapter
of Phi Delta Kappa (PDK)

The chapter was installed as the first fully functional cyberspace
chapter on January 23, 2000. The charter establishing the chapter
bears the names of seventy-two individuals who provided the
foundation for its progress from a club to become an exemplar of
collegial scholars. According to Dr. Billie Spellman of PDK
International, Walden PDK is probably the largest chapter ever
initiated in the history of Phi Delta Kappa. We are proud to have a
web site that is rated among the most distinguished in Phi Delta
Kappa. We are proud of our literacy project and our decision to
devote an entire newsletter to encourage members to support the
victims and survivors of Hurricane Katrina. We acknowledge the
contributions of Dr. Marilyn K. Simon and Dr. Brent Poppenhagen
by annually awarding a scholarship that honors their names. This
year, the promulgation of the Journal of Educational Practice for
Social Change epitomizes our raison d’etre. Our purpose is the
scientific study of education in the interest of humanity.

Phi Delta Kappa (PDK), located in Bloomington, Indiana since 1956,
was founded on January 24, 1906. PDK’s longest serving executive
director, Paul M. Cook wrote an authoritative history of the
beginnings of Phi Delta Kappa in 1931. He acknowledged the
immense contributions of Julian E. Butterworth, national secretary of
Phi Delta Kappa and David Houser, the first national historian. At
Indiana University, Columbia University, and the University of
Missouri, three organizations, independent of each other, arose to
recognize a need for collegiality and professional stimulation among
men interested in education. Later, these three groups combined as
Phi Delta Kappa with emphasis on professionalism, the cause of
education, and the scientific study of education through research.
